Plaster Day lets get perminant

From looking at our mind map an element we wanted to experiment with was temporary and periminance. Plastering a garment is like freezing it in time. We are preventing it from disitigrating. An artist that we heared about in a talk does this is Auror Thiout. Grace and I plastered some vintage/charity shop piece such as shirts and socks to see what it would look like. We tried the plaster in two session and the second one was more successful because we knew how to mix the plaster so it was just right. Here our some images Grace took, they are very errie, i like the effect the plaster had on the garments it ages them and made them seem really fragile.

Alexander McQueen - slow is beautiful

Alexander McQueens is one of the few designers who looks past the unexpected and challenges everything, which is shown prominently in his runway shows he treats them more like an exhibition of his work. Two of his shows videos are below on of which is a Hologram. It gives is an ethereal feel as if Kate moss is underwater floating, Which I though linked very well with slow beauty. I may experiment with filming different materials underwater. Here is a still below of the Hologram.

Here are some more of his unusual idea, which he uses nature in to make them unique butterfly’s gently caressing the body of a large women who is naked which some sort of breathing device it has a contrast of the naked body and butterfly’s and a metal goblin like mask creating a juxtaposition.

Another show has a Cinderella feel to it but more grimes brothers then Disney these eagle birds are typing the garment up but the model looks terrified. The garment is bottom half made from feathers so the audience might get the idea the birds are getting revenge on the girl. Has a Hitchcock feel to it.

He has such interesting ideas from so many influences and always tries to do something that has not already been done. I hope in Unit X in our group 'wearing it' we will be able to try to be more marginal then mainstream and challenge many ideas.

David Hockney - London visit

I went to visit the Hockney exhibition in London because it had had rave reviews. However, I am usually not that fond of his work yet, I was pleasantly surprised. His use of vibrant colours purple being a colour that particularly stood out for me and studying certain areas of East Yorkshire throughout the seasons. It was also pretty resent work that was exhibited the latest I think was around 2005. He has also used interesting Medias drawing on an ipad, which I did not even know you could do. Making photomontages of huge landscapes was one of my favourite elements. There was also a massive room, which had two large screens in it with 18 different camera angles of the same path but in contrasting seasons so winter beside summer moved slowly down the path of different roots, fascinating to look at and I did not know which screen to look at. Here are some example of some of his pieces that were available by postcard however I often find they never put the best images on which is a shame. This were a few which I rather liked

This particular piece would be brilliant to do a colour study from, extract colours from a certain section, to make a colour chart.

In a lot of Hockney’s pieces he mimic the different angles effect on different canvas as seen on these to pieces on above and one below. You know they are all part of the same image but something just makes each individual canvas a piece on their own because there are so many elements in each. How funny would it be if he sold each canvas individually and these owners realised they only had one element of this artist’s puzzle. I could be a process that brings 6 strangers together because they want to complete the puzzle.



With all these very vibrant pieces he has some that had more natural colours one example is the piece below they still are quite lively but more subtle then his others. When looking at Hockney’s work there is still this rushed undetailed and childlike element to it, which complements these natural landscapes, however, in other piece I thought it made him look like a 10 year old with a paintbrush. Another aspect I very much enjoyed was looking at his sketchbooks his is amazing at transforming a page with a piece of charcoal and uses some much drawing to influence his final pieces. I feel this is very important and need to use drawing more as a tool to inform and develop my work for Unit X.

Mapping in Manchester

I went the library and found a section which is called Local History and found all these old maps of manchester. From comparing the old and the new maps you can really see how much Manchester has developed. Created my own sample of the old manchester with ink on silk. It made the map look more precious, silk map... marigianl unique handcrafted all these things we were discuss with our mind map

I am a young, driven and enthusiastic Textiles student who craves to make, shape and design. I lean to the area of textiles which is more fine art based. Where materials are used to complement the pieces I create. My pieces are typically made up of more than one medium such as machine-embroidered photographs.

However I love to challenge myself and enjoy combining many different forms of medium in my work. In our project we are doing right now ‘unit x’ I found looking at digital media such as film challenging but interesting and would love to further my knowledge in this field.

I am constantly excited about starting new projects and always ensure I fulfil the clients’ requirements and what they envisage the final product to be.
