we did not to just experiment with the idea of inner (hidden) manchester being projected on to garments and the body we though it would be interesting as a lot of our samples looked quite organ/ vein like to experiment with looking at parts from inside the body and showing them on the outside. This was demonstrated with our dissolvable samples. Which were very successful and my favourite development we experimented with.

Projections of drawings on to Vincent
After looking at the samples we went on to using some of the photos we had take of our drawing and seeing how that translated on the human figure. Some images were more successful then other. I felt the ones with the bright colour were the most successful like the image just above.
Projections on Vincent
The second session we had with Vincent was a lot more successful then the first, the colours of our samples were brighter and bolder. We combined all our samples and the big drawing we had done to project on to his bare chest and see what different body textures it would create. These images just look amazing by themselves each one is so interesting and has so much texture to it.
Hidden in the jacket
I had brought a jacket for all the samples to be projected on at the beginning of project and decided i wanted to create an embrodiary sample hidden inside the jacket that looked like the inside of the body. Connecting all of the different ideas we had been looking at.
Drawing
The drawing day was very successful, there was a real sense of team work between Grace, Lamia, Sophie and I. Creating a drawing based on our samples and the brick work of Manchester, Making us form a variety of different marks on the page. Eventhough, everyone had their own individual style the drawings as a whole worked really well.

Dissolving onto the body
I experimented with small dissolvable samples and see what they would look like dissolving on the chest.
I found these piece not as successful as the group dissolvable session but it was intriguing to see how they changed and the dissolvable material at the end looked like grease on the body

Projections on the inside
Grace and I experimented with trying to project onto the inside of the shirt today going back to our intiual idea of 'hidden gem' projecting everyones new samples on the inside of a shirt giving the illusion to the audience that it is stitched into the inside.
This pieces were very successful and created really intriguing shapes on the garments. I would like to use this idea possibly again in another project.

Dissolvable sample stop motion
Learning how to use imove I experimented with using stills of a sample I hand done and bringing it into imovie to create a short stop motion film. The sample was a hand embroidered piece slowly growing. The embroidery sample was inspired by the inside of the body using different embroidery techniques.

First Projection Session
When finding out we had to make our final out come digital we decided to project our samples we had done so far on to a white shirt to link to looking at hidden Manchester within a shirt. The shirt was open to create this effect. This was the first time the group was using film equipment so everyone was experimenting with different angles. We also looked at having not only a shirt but what it would look like if some one was wearing the shirt as shown in the film. These projections were really successful and a great start to what we wanted our project to look like.

Samples inspired by the body
Similar to Gunther Von Hagens work with veins. The samples have organ like qualities. 'Hidden gems' doesnt have too just reflect the inside of Manchester It could reflect the inside of the body. This element could also be links to 'slow is beautiful' ageing you slowly get older and your veins become more excentuated.

Dying Samples
Initial sample ideas brick work- dying samples from colour palette of brick work Manchester stamp- the red brick heritage associated with Manchester.
If the first dye sample really reflects the colour of brick in Manchester. However our group started to look at this photo Josie took of the purple brick and so I changed the colour palette to more of a purple try to create different shapes and shades of colours.

Plaster Day lets get perminant
From looking at our mind map an element we wanted to experiment with was temporary and periminance. Plastering a garment is like freezing it in time. We are preventing it from disitigrating. An artist that we heared about in a talk does this is Auror Thiout. Grace and I plastered some vintage/charity shop piece such as shirts and socks to see what it would look like. We tried the plaster in two session and the second one was more successful because we knew how to mix the plaster so it was just right. Here our some images Grace took, they are very errie, i like the effect the plaster had on the garments it ages them and made them seem really fragile.

Mapping in Manchester
I went the library and found a section which is called Local History and found all these old maps of manchester. From comparing the old and the new maps you can really see how much Manchester has developed. Created my own sample of the old manchester with ink on silk. It made the map look more precious, silk map... marigianl unique handcrafted all these things we were discuss with our mind map

Evaluation on second project
I had good prospects for the next project we were doing because we came up with the brief ourselves which was a challenge and made me feel more independent. I came up with my brief from one of the seminars we had a few weeks earlier. We were having a good discussion about defining Space and Objects. It really made me think further about this idea. There is nothing better than questioning many things because of the deep conversation you have had about a certain topic. I decided to make this idea of defining Space and Objects my title for the brief. The great thing about this topic is it is so open ended there are no limits and I could explore many different angles of the topic. It happened to link quiet well to my previous project which was called ‘crowded:uncrowded’. How are objects defined in crowded spaces and uncrowded spaces. I had a very positive beginning to this project and was excited to see how it developed.
I did 3D construction for my workshop, which is quite similar to Fashion. I have been continually working in 2D so it was good to push myself into 3D. It was quite hard making the transition, I had to spend a lot of time researching and getting my idea clearly set out before creating anything on the mannequin. It has also given me a better understanding of giving pieces structure and learning simple skills such as how to cut a pattern. I ended up using an unusual material because a lot of my inspiration came from pencil shaving. I decided to work with wood, which meant I used the laser cutter to etch my design. The negative about using wood is it is a very rigid material so does not have any flexibility meaning I did feel I slightly fell back into 2D but it worked with the whole concept of my project. In my next project, I will be sure to push myself in 3D as I naturally always go for 2D because it is easier for me.
In editing my ideas I am quite successful in that field, it is obvious to me if an idea I have come up with has no future in my project. However, I have a natural instinct to make sure everything is interlinking somehow. I often will not push myself in one direct because I know it has nothing to do with previous work I have done. However since being at Manchester I have re discovered that not everything has to link and you can have separate ideas just push yourself in the direction that you feel is most effective.
Overall I am very pleased with my final idea and have a lot more pride in this project then the last, which is I feel is down to organising myself and coming to the studio more often. Furthermore, my project has a clear structure and flow to it and I have learnt new skills on the way that will be very helpful for future projects.

Space and Objects
I felt that my project was not really distinguishing the difference between object and space as much as i wanted it too. So i started to think about one of the biggest objects and spaces..... land and sea. I started research images of sea and island and the contours around the islands.

Julie suggest that my collar piece in keeping with the shaving idea that i should make it in wood and use the laser cutter to etch and cut my design out how i wanted it. I really like this image in my sketch book as shown above and felt it embodied different shapes in space and the confusion to what is batik and what is the photograph. So i decided to use this as my etching design and to have the shapes of my collar cut out of it.
this image the islands are linked by a road creating a connection between the objects in a space.
this is an image of an island with contours around it and makes me think back to my batik designs and the different shapes that were in them.

Collar
I did not know what to make i knew what my inspiration for the garment was but not how to protray it and noticed that the designers I had been looking at all focused on the neck region. I also didnt want to do anything to complicated so decided to create a collar but not a usual standard collar something that was more of an artistic piece that was worn on the neck. I did a few sketches and came up with a simple design that reflected my brief looking at space and objects it even slightly incorporated my previous brief crowding:uncrowded.
Images of my designes can be seen in my sketch book. I am un able to paste them on my blog.

3D Workshop
It has been really interesting looking at a more structural version of textiles slightly edging on Fashion. However it has really made me think in more of a 3 dimensional way. How certain materials can be manipulated around the figure and you can add elements to completely change a piece. Julie showed use a group of amazing designer who really push the boundary of fashion it is more of an art piece on a figure because they are not piece you would wear out an about. One piece I looked at by the designer was Iris Van Herpen she created a piece that reminded me of the pencil sharpening from my previous project

the circular structure with a jagged rim and pleats which are similar to the lines on the shavings.
I then found another piece that reminded me even more of the pencil shavings by Sandra Backlund
Made from hanging up pegs that have been manipulated in a fan effect. After looking at these two pieces it really inspired me to link this pencil shavings element from my previous project into this one.
Yayoi kusama
Yayoi kusama is an sculpture who really looks at the relationship between space and the objects she makes. She is continually trying to confuse the viewer by using the same print for both the space and the objects making it harder for the viewer to see what is what.In this example it is light and dark that makes it easy for the viewer to know what is what

She has a continual use of dots in her work which link back to Batik because 'ambatik' means 'a cloth with little dots' and she is using the dots to mask the space and object. It has been very helpful looking at her work because she creates sculptures that reflect what I am try to achieve. However I have mainly been working with print which is 2D but my new workshop is 3D construction which is more structural. I really need a push into work less 2 dimensional and more 3.
here is another example of her work using lighting it is so intriguing

New Brief
Space and objects how can we define them?
What defines space, objects and the relationship between them? What part does for example light, scale, pattern, line, surface play in defining space and form? How can they be manipulated to confuse the viewer? I hope to achieve these ideas through different types of research looking at artist, architectures and photographers. Though different aspects such as colour, scale, material, surface, pattern, shape and technique how where they able to confuse the viewer and will I be able to have the same success.

Pencil Shavings
I wanted to move my project on to a completely different direction when I started doing my workshop in 3D construction. So I started to look at other forms of crowding and uncrowding which could be developed into a structured form.
My idea was completely by accident, I had left some pencil shaving on one of my pieces of paper and though it would be an interesting area to develop. There where elements of the pencil shavings which reminded me of the Batik design so I was still linking it back to my last project. Also I was focusing on a different element of Crowding:Uncrowding. I was looking at space and objects and determining the differencs between them. Which i had set as part of my new brief.
I discovered an artist who used shaving to re-create portraits of people and found it fascinating called Kyle Bean.

I tried to form my own Batik designs from these shavings and felt they were very successful and used elements fo my old colour palette.
