We had a lecture for Lauren Bowker who is a textiles student who only two years ago left mmu. She has explored a completely different side to art which is combining it with science. From doing this it has open many doors for her and she is doing very well in the industry. I was very motivated by her talk because it made me think that if you work hard enough and use your skills to your advantages you will do well in the industry. One of the thinks Lauren said which stuck in my head was.... 'you have a skill that they want so don’t sell yourself short and get used by them get them to go that extra mile to have you working for them'. This advice is so useful in the industry. People who are in high places in the industry use fresh artist to their advantage and screw them over and these new artist end up not succeeding even if they have the talent. This is not always in every case as Lauren has proven but it happens a lot. She also said not to be scared if you don’t believe in what you are doing, why would your client want it if you dont even like it or believe in it, after all one of the main things in art is to not only push boundaries but do something unusual and back it up. Which is why in some cases naivety can work to your advantage which is what Lauren said she has found.
here is one of her piece that made people talk because they were so intrigued
On to her work that she showed use, I saw a lot of which I felt embodied the feel of slow is beautiful. She uses a lot of chemical on garments that affect the colour through different causes such as pollution. The garment will slowly dissolve its colour into another. As shown below this is when it is like in a polluted area. It looks as though it has been tarnished by charcoal.
She also focuses on sustainable fashion and has in fact won a prize ‘the role of materials in a sustainable fashion industry’. A huge amount of unit X is focusing on this factor because it is affecting us now.
Here is a film of one of her piece which I feel really links to slow is beautiful
